  This was delivered in the Philippines at the time the country was in the midst of impeachment hearings of plunder against President Estrada. The importance of preparing a next generation of students for a more stable more ethical Philippines ultimately depends on how they are formed by their teachers. But if their teachers continue as they have for decades, the next generations will not be any better. Clearly a re-thinking of teacher education was needed.

  This was my first major talk as head of Bangkok's Asia-Pacific office. It highlights the latest trends in teach3e education and its relationship to economic, political, and social spheres.

  Philippine Normal College should be more than just a major teacher training institutions. As the government's flagship institution in this field it must assume additional roles of innovation, leadership within the teacher education community, closer linkages to the Department of Education and its in-service programs, and mor3e active participation with its alumni another stakeholders.
